We will delve into the complexity of colorism and self-hate, beginning a healing journey rooted in learning to accept ourselves so that we may fully accept our own. Colorism—prejudice or discrimination based on skin tone, often within the same racial or ethnic group—has deep roots in colonialism, slavery, and the promotion of Eurocentric beauty standards. These external forces have shaped how many of us see ourselves and one another, often leading to internalized oppression and self-rejection. Self-hate manifests when we absorb the belief that lighter skin, straighter hair, or more “refined” features are superior, distancing us from our own identities and communities. The emotional toll is heavy, leading to fractured relationships, diminished self-worth, and generational cycles of pain. But healing is possible. Through honest dialogue, self-reflection, and radical self-love, we can begin to dismantle…
